South Central Library Media Center is proud to sponsor the following student reading programs:
  • Daily Sustained Silent Reading in the Jr. Sr. High (20 minutes of reading is rotated through the school based on departments)
  • Night at the Library
  • BEAR
  • STARS
  • High School Ride to Read
  • Undercover Talk
  • Rival Reading Challenge
  • Name That Book
South Central Library Media Center participates in the following student reading programs:

  • Put Your Nose In a Book - Time Out for Reading
  • Swoop's Reading Club - South Bend Silver Hawks
South Central administration, teachers and staff provide resources and opportunities to build avid and capable readers. Several years ago, Mrs. McGriff and Mrs. Angelos conducted action reserach and found a positive correlation between participation in outside of school reading and student academic achievement, in other words students who read outside of school are more successful and continue to become better readers.

  • Night at the Library is a celebration of summer reading. An annual event since 2007, elementary students who pariticpated in a summer reading program were invited to attend Night at the Library on September 4


           
  • SC BEAR

    South Central - Be Excited About Reading

    • Elementary voluntary reading motivation program
    • Students in grades 2 - 6 read and log a minimum of 300 minutes per month outside of school
    • Students in grades K & 1 read and log 20 books per month outside of school
    • Classroom teachers collect logs each month and keep track of successful students
    • BEAR celebrations will be held monthly for those who meet the goal

  • STARS

    South Central - Stand Together and Read Satellites

    • 6th, 7th, and 8th grade voluntary reading motivation program
    • Students read and log a minimum of 1000 minutes per semester
    • Students must participate both semesters to qualify for the field trip to Indiana Beach

  • Rival Reading Challenge Flyer

    South Central High School vs. Westville High School - which school can read the most pages in March?
  • South Central Junior-Senior High book club, Undercover Talk meets the second Monday of the month in the LMC. Any student who likes to read is invited to attend. Undercover Talk members discuss books, recommend books and activities, plan reading day events, attend field trips, and help purchase books for the SC Media Center.  

         
  • Young Hoosier Book Award


    Indiana's student choice award sponsored by Association for Indiana Media Educators

    • Young Hoosier Picture Book Award - (K-3)
    • Young Hoosier Book Award - Intermediate (4-6)
    • Young Hoosier Book Award - Middle School (6-8)

  • New high school reading program, students read 1200 minutes each semester. Logs are due January 9 and May 4 to the LMC.
