Transportation Services

South Central Community School Corporation serves just over 1,000 students, and transportation is provided to all students who live in the district. Each bus provides transportation for pre-kindergarten through 12th grade. The district has four major highways: U.S. Route 6 to the north, State Road 39 to the east, U.S. Route 30 to the south, and U.S. Route 421 to the west. Having four major roads in our district makes safety even more important. For this reason, the transportation safety of students and staff will always be considered first.

Important Reminders
  • Always dress your student appropriately. If a bus has a problem in cold weather, warm clothing will be necessary.
  • Make sure your student can get into the house and knows what to do in case of an early dismissal, delay, or bus turnaround. You should plan for such occurrences, so your student is not left in a dangerous situation.
  • You are requested not to contact the offices about whether the school will be open or closed. School phone lines are important in assessing situations. Understandably, it may be necessary to contact the school; however, you should make arrangements ahead of time for your students.
  • Be familiar with the bus driver. If you have questions about the route, you should contact the driver.
  • Always assume school is open unless notified by SchoolMessenger, the school website, or official school social media pages.

Weather-Related Procedures
If district roads are passable, we intend to have school. If roads are not passable at the beginning of the school day, school may be delayed or closed completely, thus issuing an elearning/virtual learning day. If a situation arises during the day, we will need your cooperation. Listed below are some terms you should know and ways you may help. Please take some time to familiarize yourself with these procedures.
  • School is Delayed: This term means that school will start two hours later than the normal time. A two-hour delay would mean that if your student were to meet a bus at 7:20am, the bus would come at 9:20am. If the delay occurs on a Wednesday, late start is not recognized, and the bus will arrive two hours later than the normal time.
  • School is Closed: This term is used if the school will be closed for the entire day. Additionally, an elearning/virtual learning day may be used. It also means school events for the day could be canceled or postponed.
  • Early Dismissal: This term is used when a situation makes it necessary to close school early. Students will be transported home earlier than the normal dismissal time.
  • Bus Turnaround: This term is used if we attempt to open school and find conditions worsening. If this happens, buses will return students to their drop-off location.
